I think that this would be referred to as Amanita excelsa var. spissa because of the brown cap colour and the bulbous base
You could add this as an alternative ID and then some of the people may switch to supporting that version of the identification.
Of course It's the same species (complex?) and Isn't there a move to drop the whole .var suffix anyway?
It was just an observation as, according to Kibby's description, Amanita excelsa .var excelsa, has a greyish cap, tall stature, less bulbous and often rooting base and would be a good fit with this post http://www.ispotnature.org/node/697146?nav=latest the pictures above look just like his description of Amanita excelsa .var spissa.
