I have never heard that one (and don't understand it!).

Taken from wiki description via helophilus pendulus search. Is this incorrect?
No idea where the name comes from! This rush to give common names to all insects is beyond me. Why would 'European' be a good name?
I get the impression that various names are coming in to use without any central organisation. I have seen Sericomyia silentis put on here as 'Bog Hoverfly', when that has traditionally been used for Eristalis cryptarum, for example.
I'd stick to the scientific name until an agreed list of names is published.
Unfortunately name does not appear editable. Thank you for your advice.
