Hi, forgive my ignorance but I've never seen a Curlew Sandpiper: however these birds look quite dumpy, what rules out Dunlin ?

I think both of you are correct. The 1st photo shows a Dunlin in front of a Curlew Sandpiper and the Curlew Sandpiper is on the left in the photo below.
The Curlew Sandpiper looks a bit more elegant with the longer bill and clean underparts below the peach wash and more pronounced supercilium.
