The creature on the LHS is

The creature on the LHS is the mayfly and the thing on the RHS is the cast skin of the nymph which lives in water and from which the adult emerged. This is a lovely observation!

one mayfly

The 'googly eyed' mayfly has probably just emerged from its larval case (the 'empty shell' next to it). They look a bit odd when they are newly emerged.
