Description:

This and a few hoverflies were making the best use of the few remaning thistle flowers.

Conops

Could well be quadrifasciatus, but I can't make out the shimmer stripes on the side of the thorax and the length of the proboscis is not clear. There is Conops ceriaeformis to consider and the genus Leopoldius is very similar.
