Good spot... has to be this with the uneven claw sizes and hairy claws and carapace.
Nick Upton, naturalist and photographer.
I havent seen many of these and only in very recent years. I found th remains of a few dead ones washed up prior to finding this nice specimen alive.
I didn't come across any on a recent major rockpooling/photography trip to Cornwall, but did find masses of Porcelain crabs, Montagu's crabs (look like bodybuilders) and a stunning little Leach's crab (I think - an Inachus for sure, ) covered in red sponge, some nice little squat lobsters, plus shore crabs, edibles. Will post some pics in due course.
I was rockpooling today, best thing I got was some young mullet and some incredibly young mullet, 1" long, posting them now. I saw what I think was a baby butterfish, about 13mm long but I didnt get a pic, it got lost in a bucket with other small fish.
You have been busy! I'll leave the fish experts to react to your fish posts (though the fat lipped ones do look mullet like to me..) but I've ticked the Shore rockling as it's a perfect match for the one I posted yesterday which got some agreement. I found a shoal of what I think are young herring in a rockpool and got some nice pics which I'll post in due course.
I posted some juvenile herring a few days ago, they came up around the rocks in their millions possibly as a result of the many fish feeding on them. Looking forward to seeing your herrings.
OK must check yours out to compare. Just fast-tracked mine onto the site.
