A grass moth that came to an actinic light trap in the wood.
No interactions present.
The reason I keep using the gender assignment provided by iSpot is so that the carousel will work - if you change the gender, it doesn't, and the moths I put up will get lost in the system.
appears to have found the other records identified as Crambus perlellus, so carousel working ok?
The carousel has found two other records of Crambus perlellus, but there are many of Crambus perlella that now won't get linked up with this one.
This is really a problem with
a) the iSpot lookup list which contains such invalid names and
b) the way iSpot handles names, it should recognise that synonyms and common mispellings represent the same organism but it doesn't. NBN simply and efficiently handles names this way so it can be done.
The problem is not with people who use ICZN compliant valid names, that is in a sense blaming the messenger.
Previous records under Crambus perlella are not in any sense lost, just search on that name and you will find them. If you really need them to come up on the perlellus carousel, you are free to post a new identification with the valid name.
I can understand using a name not on the iSpot list but more valid. Just pointing out that people using the iSpot names, who do not know that the same species might be listed under more than one name or what those other names might be, will start to miss records that might be useful to them.
I look forward to the iSpot upgrade which fixes the problem.
