I'd just watched a woodpigeon exhibiting the same behaviour and remarked on it to my husband when your observation came up! My woody started by sitting on the ridge of our garage before moving to nestle into the lawn. It is very hot and sunny here and I wondered if the lawn was cool. I often see them sitting in our birdbath like this!

They have left some feathers on the lawn. Day was damp and cool. Could this be a way of cleaning itself of parasites?
