I think the split between Chamaenerion/Chamerion and Epilobium is that the leaves of the former are spirally arranged and are opposite in the latter. If the taxonomist does not think this to be important then both are put in Epilobium.

Over time plants may be assigned to different genera (the first name of the pair - the Latin binomial)but they usually keep the species name (the second name) - however the ending of the name may change slightly so that it agrees in Latin grammar with the genus name.

Thanks Mark and cicuta58. A wee bit confused, but I'll survive. Having seen huge swathes of rosebay willowherb in the forest,I now understand why another name for it is called fire weed.
