Found dead on garden path. No obvious wounds, though I suspect it was unfortunately a casualty of next door's cat.

It could well have been the cat. However, if you had really heavy rain as we did then this could also have killed it.

Thanks for this. We have had heavy rain, though not until after this little shrew was found. I'm always suspicious of the cat which is very predatory and kills lots of birds.
This is the second water shrew we have found in our garden, and yet we have no water ( other than a trough put out for the birds) for a mile or two.
In my ignorance, I always thought a shrew WAS a rodent! How interesting.
Shrews are insectivores and are grouped with hedgehogs, moles etc. rather than rodents.
Water shrews do range far from water; but it does look like this is a cat bringing a present.
