Wasp or bee?

Observed: 14th August 2012 By: Sarah Thomas

This wasp or bee was with many others taking nectar from a large clump of ragwort. It was longer than the others (c. 1.25cm), had horizontal stripes (black on yellow) on its abdomen, a black on yellow design on its thorax and vertical stripes (black on white) on its head. Unfortunately I didn't get a photograph.

I'm afraid it's difficult -

to offer suggestions without photos, given the diversity of similar species. Predators usually give bees and wasps a wide berth, so mimicry is common.
You could have a trawl through the excellent BWARS site ( - which is enjoyable to do anyway - and see if you can find a match.
