I saw this in my garden on the 13th and then this morning the 14th it had changed.
Is this unusual?

Live as individual microscopic cells, but then aggregate into these "fruiting bodies". Little was known about them when I had to learn it for exams many years ago - I think there is more information available now.
The change is probably due to the development of the sporing heads.
Possibly Stemonitis axifera.
