Round spikey invertebrate, about 7mm diameter, found on a leaf beside a small river

Is this the pupal stage of an insect and, if so, what insect might it be?
I would go with a leaf-beetle of some kind but we need a specialist to get further.
It has been suggested by a friend who has had a similarly looking invertebrate identified that this might be the pupa of a Ladybird, possibly Kidney-spotted. Can anyone confirm or dispute this?
