Looks like a Harvestman (Opiliones) with a red mite attached
Many thanks indeed for the identification bugbotherer. The invertebrate in question has now been identified as a young Mitopus morio.
Just to clarify, the red "dot", as mentioned, is a phoretic mite ("phoresy" is where one animal attaches to another for transportation only - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commensalism).
