Description:

One of many sparrows that visit my garden. For some years we didn't see any, but they seem to be making a comeback, at least locally. I really missed them...

Age

From the wear on the feathers, it looks like an adult female (at least, not born this year). Some adults show what looks very much like a juvenile's gape.

Interesting...

I didn't know that. I assumed that the gape was a giveaway. But there you are, I've been wrong before and I'm sure I'll be wrong again!

But the barring on the tail feathers is usually indicative of growth patterns in a young bird, so this might be a juvenile after all. If it is, it must be a very early one as the feathers are so worn. Perhaps it's just had a hard life...
