Some fungi are very poisonous so a mistaken ID could have serious consequences.

One of the "similar" is M konradii An identifying feature of M konradii is the thick double ring on the stem which we unfortunately cannot see.
Thanks flaxton. Perhaps my contact in France went by probabilities, knowing what species are usually to be found in the wood in question. I will certainly ensure that any future photos I take of fungi will give a better view of the parts of the fungi that can identify them!
