Is this a variation that has evolved in the wild and exists independently there, or has it evolved through horticultural breeding and is a garden escapee?
I would guess it occurred in the wild and was taken into cultivation and is now escaping. There is another version with white flowers but the normal reddish stems etc. (var bernettii).
Many thanks cicuta58. In this case it was very close to habitation so most likely a recent escapee. It certainly caught the eye!
I have this in my garden where it appeared about 5 years ago. Whereas I pull up the standard red stemmed, pink flowered variety because it is so invasive, I find this white one is a more delicate and much less thuggish plant altogether, and my feeling is that it must be not just a variation, but more likely a garden cultivar or separate species?
