Observed on rocks exposed at low tide, tide fully out. Curious seaweed, can anyone help me ID it please?

In the 2nd pic the discs must be the perennial part (ie the base)of the thongweed Himenthalia elongata. In the 1st it's almost as if one is inflated. I've now found Paula lightfoot's very similar, http://www.ispot.org.uk/node/79355
Thanks for this Chris. At first I thought they were 2 different things but the swollen ones and the flat ones were growing together and it appeared to be the one species in different states as you say. Its a curious plant.
