There is no sign of the small discal cell on the wing of a soldier fly. The abdomen is very slender and squarish yellow spots can just be made out. Similar soldier flies would have a broader abdomen (even if only slightly)and usually would have spines at the tip of the scutellum.
The shiny thorax is found on hoverflies, too, though sometimes is not made clear in books.
