scent test

scented (Matricaria recutita) and scentless (Tripleurospermum inodorum) mayweeds are not easy to tell apart visually, so I like to use the "scent test".

Run a finger tip across the top of the disc flowers and then sniff your finger - scentless mayweed is either scentless or has a faint sweet scent, while scented mayweed usually has a strong aromatic scent.

If the scent test isn't convincing, split a receptacle in half - Matricaria has a hollow receptacle, and TripleurospermumAnthemis is rarer, and has scented foliage.
