Very common but as I don't know what it is...... it's difficult to look up!

Great (or rattail) plantain (Plantago major) has a long inflorescence, and ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata) a short one. In regions where the other 3 species are absent (Plantago maritima and Plantago coronopus are mostly coastal, and Plantago media on limestone) this allows one to identify these two species even when the foliage is buried in other vegetation, or has died off.
