One of several Stag Beetles that visited our garden in 2009. Have also attached a second shot of two more males.

The largest of our Beetles in the UK.

I remember seeing a couple of these beetles when i was a kid in NE London, in one of the many graveyards, i was around 8+ years old (1974), they were seen sunning themselves on a cutdown tree trunk.
My observations are that only the males have the massive jaws, in which they use them mostly in male to male fighting, also in mating they hold on to the females with those jaws to stop her from running away.
Sadly i have never seen any since that day, we have since moved away from London to Milton Keynes in 1980.

There are some records of Stag Beetle in Buckinghamshire, but very few north of the Chilterns, and I've never seen a confirmed record from Milton Keynes (although there are some mapped on the NBN map in the link above).
