Hi Simon, lovely birds these. I had one not 10 yards from me in the Lake District perched and calling. Guess what, I had the wrong lens with me and had to make a fist of it with 105mm. If I'd had the 500mm it would have been a peach of an opportunity. Ever happened to you ?

And it's so frustrating, isn't it? Last time it was a grass snake swimming in front of me, and I'd got a 100mm macro attached in order to photograph water snails. What to do? Try to switch, and risk (a) dropping one lens or the other, or )b) having the snake disappear before the changeover; or do the best you can with what's attached?
I went with the latter, but I still think I might have been better to have changed. I'll never know. But at least my lenses aren't bust. I can't afford to replace the 500mm - the Mk II Canon F4 is about £8.5k now, and the Mk Is are getting hard to find.
