Great crested Newt

This is a female GCN and also known as Warty Newts with the rough warty skin.

GCN

Agreed - bear in mind this impressive newt is an internationally rare & especially protected species. Both it & its pond are legally protected. We are lucky in the country in having more of this newt than anywhere else.

This next isn't a criticism of your actions in seeking its identification but be aware that it shouldn't be captured deliberately.

Indeed

It was under a rock I was moving in a new pond I created this year on the site of an older pond. I moved it to save it from squashing it and it swam back into the pond quite happily after I took the picture. I was very careful. And will be even more careful now I know it is in there.
