RE False Widow

Thanks Alan for the ID - can you tell if its a male or a female ? - According to another website the female has a painful bite, but the male doesn't bite. It might be useful to know the difference if I come across another one.

Female most likely

If it's an adult, and the size given suggests that's likely, then it's a female - males of most spiders have clubbed palps. Even if it's sub adult, the stage before adult, then in a male the palps would be swollen.
