Rainbow leaf beetle?

Observed: 30th June 2012 By: FazeriderFazerider’s reputation in Invertebrates
beetle
Description:

I don't know if this is a good enough picture to make an identification... the camera autofocus kept getting confused by the background. The insect is nose down in the leaf node. Not sure what it is on, looks like pea family, but is in a very densely stocked garden with about 50 other species of herbs, grasses and flowering perennials within a few metres so the plant may not be significant as the beetle didn't appear to be interested in using it as anything other than a resting place.

Thanks, Chris!

Yes, that's it. My insect identification book doesn't include C. americana for some reason. C, cerealis was the nearest it had in appearance, but you're definitely correct. There was lavender, rosemary, sage and thyme in close proximity.
