This fish is also known as a 'Long Spined Sea Scorpion'. There is also a 'Short Spined Sea Scorpion' - that could be another possibility
Thanks Rob, looking at pics of the short spined one I think its that (The websight called it a Bull rout) Myoxocephalus scorpius I dont think it was as spiny as the long spined sea scorpion.

I think you're right Trudy, it's eyes were in the right place and it wasn't quite as spiky as the other two suggestions.
I think I made a mistake with this and Trudy got it right - the perspective makes it looks like the head is large in proportion to the body. Taurulus bubalis also has a tentacle in the corner of its mouth. I've put a picture of what I think is a Shanny up at http://www.ispot.org.uk/node/27692 for comparison
