chrysalis of what?

Last year everything seemed out of step... it looks like a chrysalis to me, but of what at the end of September? That's the thumb of my gardening glove beside it in the photo

query on colour

Thanks for the id...can I ask, what makes them differ in colour? are they chameleon?

colour variation

many caterpillars including dot moth and elephant hawk have green and brown forms, and other variants, much of this is under genetic control, although for the more translucent/ transparent species the colour of the gut contents contributes to the overall effect. I don't know if any caterpillars can change colour to match their background
