Oh dear, is there a way of separating them in the field, do they have different spatial/habitat distributions or is that not yet known?

Just keep calling them F.

Just keep calling them F. rufa for the moment, and leave the technicalities for others. At the moment, to do the business you will need your laptop and a DNA analyser, not too convenient to carry into the woods with you!
