Thanks Syrphus for ID

I now feel I must find the nest. As the back yard is paved, there's a shortage of suitable areas for a nest mound. They're probably in a plant pot.

They are unlikely to be in a noticeable mound. Under the paving stones sounds an excellent place, or maybe the pot. Only a few of our ants create obvious mounds as a rule, though most will form small hills (up to a few cm high) on occasions in the right conditions.
