Much bigger than the other finches and with a huge beak. Plumage not as bright as I've once seen before, so maybe a female. By the time I'd got my camera it had moved from an ideal position for photographing and I was only able to get these two poor quality pics of front and back view before it departed. (The blur on the left is a much closer flower).

Hawfinch and other observations

Hi Ginny B

I see you are a contributor to iSpot with records from Aberdeenshire. I am from the North East Scotland Biological Records Centre (NESBReC) based in Aberdeen. We collate records of all species for use by local authorities and conservation bodies in our area. Do you pass on your records to anyone else at all? We would like to input your records into our database, if you are agreeable. Do get in touch with us at and have a look at our website at

Thank you for your interest

Thank you for your interest. I wish even more that I had been able to take a photo of this bird the moment I first saw it as it would have made a far better photo and far more recognisable.

This is the first and only place I have ever posted my records. I'm afraid I hadn't heared of NESBReC before and will be in touch.
