The plant is growing in rough grassland which has been left as a 'birdfood'area. There are other flowers such as sainfoin and scarlet clover in the same area.
It is about two feet high, with slightly hairy leaves. The flower racemes come from the leaf axils. The seed heads are a flat disc with the sepals in a star shape around them.
