Description:

I was just saving an observation to Ispot when I glanced out of the window to see this Kestrel (male) hovering. I grabbed my camera and dashed outside in time to see it pounce and catch it flying away with its prize. Looks like it caught a rat.

amazing, do you think it

amazing, do you think it killed the rat before transport otherwise it would be struggling violently.

Rat

It spent a good 10 seconds on the ground before taking off so I assume so.

Great Pictures

The first picture is really good for the impression of speed.

The second one has caught the detail brilliantly.

The prey looks big against the bird but I wonder if a rat might be just too big for a kestrel to manage to carry? You might be right though!

Fantastic

Could be a young rat, what ever it is it's going to have a large lunch.

prey item

I'd say possibly a rat from photo 1. Almost certainly a young one
