What different species of comfrey could this possibly be, and what identifying factors would I need to determine which of them it actually is?
there are three types Common,Tuberous,Rough and Russian.
Common is rough, hairy with strikingly winged stems, grows in damp ground beside rivers and ditches, flowers tubular to bell shaped colour varies from white, pink or purple in curved clusters.
Tuberous similar to common but flower is creamy yellow unbranched grows in shady spots
Russian is a hybrid between Russian and rough, slightly winged stems, flowers bluish purple
there are also garden hybrid escapes
Yours maybe common comfrey but I do not feel confident enough so that is why I went for family only.
I hope this help's
Many thanks again for so kindly providing this information Fenwickfield. Having now read some descriptions elsewhere, this could even be a Russian Comfrey. What is sure is that now I know the level of details required to distinguish the species, my photos are rather inadequate...
There are always some that are rather tricky pleased to be able to help.
