A drama unfolds!
Mallard attacking a young duckling
A bird in the hand
Reunited with family

I came across this brood which had no adults with them. They showed no fear of my very close presence (I know they are no more than three days old). Whilst I watched them, another family or group consisting of 2 adult females and 3 youngsters came along. One of the adults began attacking one of the orphaned ducklings which had tried to join up with them - pushing it underwater etc. After the third attack, the youngster fled onto the riverbank towards me and tried to hide in long grass. I picked it up but before I could do anything, the rest of the brood had disappeared. I hung around for a bit wondering what to do for the best and then another female with 3 ducklings came along. I compared the colouring of the youngsters with the one in hand (a lighter brown as opposed to some other families which were more black on top. (They looked a good match!) so I took a chance. I released the duckling and it scooted straight towards the family and was accepted instantly by the mother. Happy ending!
