Woodland mushroom or toadstool

I found this in tame woodland, and was so instantly curious that I plucked it up before even thinking to photograph it where it lay first. I didn't take a spore print, but the paper I wrapped it in was stained brown by the time I had the chance to look at it closely. I have no intention of eating it, or any mushroom I find - I am just curious.

Caution: Do NOT use iSpot to identify fungi to eat!

Some fungi are very poisonous so a mistaken ID could have serious consequences.
