Testudo (graeca) ibera

I breed this species (hence my monika), and can confirm with total confidence that this photo is indeed of a fine specimen of what we term iberas. Tough and gorgeous :-)

Thank you!

I usually have my eyes peeled for birds or plants so was quite surprised but delighted to see this.

Tortoises in Turkey

Turkey is a stronghold for this species. They are still flourishing in the hills, surprisingly high up, and plentiful on farmland where the locals tolerate them, but their coastal habitats are sadly being destroyed by tourism - whole hillsides being dynamited away for hotel comlexes :-(

What a responsibility.

As a tourist we don't realise what may have been there before the beautiful hotel we stay in was built. Naively we hope we provide jobs and trade but actually we cause devastation.
