All of the whooper swans on Lake Tjörnin had this brown coloration on their heads. Is it just from the water or something they eat that discolours the feathers?

Is that the colour comes from volcanic ash in fine suspension in the water. But it's only a guess.
A great photo - difficult not to anthropomorphise and assign a slightly winsome expression to it!
I think it was hopeful we might have some food. As you say, would like to think it was trying to look appealing, but I think it was just disappointed/puzzled that nothing was forthcoming!
