Females cannot be identified to species. Murdo (Syrphus) would know which species are found in your area, though, so maybe he will see this.

If it is anything other than

If it is anything other than germanica I would eat my boots. I have never seen the others up here, though one never knows. What is good is the location - fills in a gap between Durness and Gairloch (or would if we could be sure what it was). Try and find a male (swollen tip to the abdomen) and get a sharp pic from behind, and it can be done to species.
