Underground fungi

Orange coloured fungi found underground in garden among ivy roots. Has dried out and shrunk since found but is about 9cm in all directions
Can anyone identify it please?

I don't know. I will try to cut a piece off the end and take another photo

Did you had a chance to have a closer look at this?
Seems not to be a fungal fruitbody (as a truffle is), but something growing with/out from the roots? A bit more like a gall.
Root galls/tumor-like growth can be caused by fungi, but also by a range of other organisms such as bacteria (Agrobacterium spp.) or nematodes, for example.
As suggested before this would require to look inside - any visible structure when cut, or perhaps even to check microscopically.
