Description:

Thalli tightly adpressed to the side of a chest tomb. Very wet (lichenising in the rain), so the colour is probably unrepresentative. Xanthoparmelia or Arctoparmelia incurva, or something else?

Thoughts

My first thought is to advise not photographing soggy lichens. Key characters are invisible or surprisingly altered.

My second though is to wonder what the isidia (assuming it had some) were like.

Melanelixia I suspect.

Aha!

Never thought of Melanelixia. Thank you. I should be able to photograph this in its dry state when I return in July/August, because it is a churchyard I want to revisit. Sorry about the soggy lichens, but I was only in Wales for a few rainy days and had to make the most of them - the lichen flora is far more diverse than it is in and around Manchester!
