Linking accounts

I just downloaded this but can't link to my account and access the app (I think this may be because I use a different email for iSpot and my android account). Is there anyway to manually link to the account rather, bypassing this first screen? Otherwise I can't use the app, which would be a shame.

Are you sure that you haven't

Are you sure that you haven't just typed your password incorrectly? Try again as the linking should work just on your iSpot username and password and not require an e-mail address. Note that if you have Android version 4. on your phone the app won't work fully - we are fixing this known problem ASAP. Otherwise, it does work!

There doesn't seem to be any opportunity to enter my password, just a button that says 'link to existing account' which always fails when I try it.

When you click that button it

When you click that button it should take you to a screen that says 'Log in to iSpot' and that's where you enter your details. I assume this is not happening. Does the app crash, or what? What version of Android are you using?

Using 2.3.3. It doesn't crash, just says there is an error authorising the account, please try again later and then it returns to the screen.

No internet access?

Hi Masked Marvel,

it sounds like your device might not be able to access the internet, which it needs to to allow you to authorise your account.
Could you check this please?

It certainly can access the internet, I use it all the time for that. I regularly use it to access the main iSpot site.

Check app settings

Hi Masked Marvel,

would you mind checking the permissions you've got set for this app?

To use it properly you'll need to make sure the app has the following permissions:

* Your location
* Storage
* Network communication
* Hardware controls

These should be set when installing the app but it's worth just checking these are correct.

Thanks,

Richard G - iSpot technical team

Checked these and they all look in order.

Finally have been able to

Finally have been able to link accounts and use the app, I'm not sure what suddenly changed. The app looks good and works well but waiting to be able to add and agree identifications before I'll use it much. One thing that would be good would be the ability to see higher resolution photos. Viewing the regular website on my phone reduces the photo quality quite a lot and has led to me adding or agreeing incorrect identifications. I appreciate there will always be limitations to the amount of data that there devices can handle.

Thanks for the feedback and

Thanks for the feedback and for persisting with the app. The features you want will be added to the next version which will be a quantum leap ahead of the current one. Should be out in 6 - 8 weeks. Since you have the beta version installed, I think that the update will be automatically installed or at least notified.

Re seeing images at higher res, if you tap on the photo in an observation it will go to full screen and you can zoom in on it too. Have you tried that?

Thanks for the photo-viewing

Thanks for the photo-viewing tip. Much better than viewing through the regular website on a phone.

Timing Problems?

I’m thinking there may be a slight timing issue. I assume the app looks for various handshaking acks and drops out if it fails to see them; I notice this a lot when the app is trying to verify and it will often drop out having only verified some birds on the list. Perhaps the timers need widening slightly to cope with poor signal (equals low speed/bandwidth) or peak periods (has the same effect as poor signal because the phone will be switched to an available but more distant sector).

Senior Moment!

Please ignore my random musings, I’m talking about a different app entirely here!!? I was thinking of the BTO android app for BrirdTrack, sorry for any confusion.

So far so good

Easy to navigate, though tend to use it on wi-fi so can't comment on 3g performance.

Thanks Jonathan!

unable to link app to account

Hi there

I would appreciate your advice please, I have downloaded the iSpot app several times on my Smartphone (running Android 2.3.4) but I haven't been able to log in at all from my phone. Every time I start the App the orange ' link existing account ' button appears, but when I press on the button I constantly get a screen saying linking account for a couple of seconds then get returned to the previous screen with an error message, I can't get past that point sadly.

I have tried the app on a tablet running 4.0.3 but have the same problem :(

Both devices happily connect to the internet without any problems.

Can you advise please?

Thank you
Sarah

Linking to your iSpot account

We think we've managed to track down and fix the bug that was preventing the iSpot app linking to iSpot accounts on the website, so hopefully Ben and others will be able to get this working now. But, as ever, please do report it if you still find problems.

Thanks !

Thanks a lot, it's working now.

Just wanted to report something strange : during the first try, after i entered my id + password, when i checked the 'i agree' button, the app sent me the error message again and went back to the 'linking to account' page.

I tried a second time and it worked. No problem since. Probably nothing but still wanted to report it.

Thanks again !

Account linking - bug

Yes, sorry about this - we are currently experiencing a bug in the account linking for some users.

When you go to link accounts for the first time it will start the process but for some users (such as yourself) is then fails, producing the message that there is an error linking accounts. However, as far as we can tell if you then go through the same process a second time it should work. Don't uninstall the app, just try linking the account a second time.

We are running tests to find the source of this bug, and will get the app updated as soon as we can - apologies in the meantime.
