Description:

This wasp-mimic hoverfly was by the pond in Downhills park today. I'm delighted to see it here as I've only found it before on Hackney marshes. This species can be seen in grassland and open woodland. It can also be found near pathways as males like low flying. In flight and appearance it mimics Digger Wasps such as Ectemnius, and it lays its eggs in the nests of ants.
