Description:

I'm sure this is a Lime tree (Tilia) but which one? Can it be Common Lime (Tilia europaea) or the small leaved lime. Should I just measure the leaves or is there another way

Leaves

The leaves are too large and not cordate enough for Tilia cordata. Tilia x europaea is far more common than T. platyphyllos but they are hard to distinguish. Apparently the leaves at the top of the tree are the best to look at! Good luck!

Thank you

Thank you so much. I was so hoping they were the small leaved lime and maybe an indicator of an old woodland. The leaves at the top of the tree are a long way up but I am returning to the woodland and will try to get a better view. I am gripped with looking at trees in this particular woodland!!!

Why

Why have you repeated your ID (and mis-spelled the Latin)? It serves no purpose at all.

Hi cicuta58.For what it's

Hi cicuta58.
For what it's worth I have no idea how this happened. Now you've pointed it out, I've tried to get rid of the second ID with incorrect spelling in edit but can't seem to delete it. I think I must have done something batty when I added some extra photos.
Anyway, after being initially somewhat mortified by your comments I thought I would say thank you for returning to my photos. I had found some leaves which looked more heart shaped and added the photos (darker photo), this obviously somehow caused the problem. As you hadn't commented on them and I see you have lots of 'badges'The initial identification must be correct and they are not the small leaved variety. I am just trying to explain what happened as you did ask the question 'Why' so may pop back again!!!!

Limes

Still sticking to Tilia sp. (but not cordata!). iSpot seems quite good at inducing errors; it has got me on occasion, so don't worry.
