A number of small millipedes were crossing a narrow, metalled road approaching the very summit of Kit Hill Country Park in hot, dry weather. Some were in the car park. Surrounding countryside is short unimproved grassland and heathland with heather, gorse, bilberry on granite rocks. This behaviour seemed surprising, as we thought millipedes preferred damp leaf litter, so at first we assumed they were caterpillars, before noticing the legs and other millipede features. Which millipedes cross roads in quite large numbers in sunny conditions?
