This bird (possibly a sparrowhawk) was seen plucking a small dark bird on my lawn. Poor photograph, I know, but I wanted to have a record of it before it flew away.

I would agree with female

I would agree with female sparrowhawk. Typical behaviour. The chest bars and moustachial stripes suggest female rather than juvenile.

Just go out there and do it!!!

Sparrowhawk at work

There are few opportunities to take a photo of this sort of thing, so don't worry unduly about the quality!

I couldn't agree more. I

I couldn't agree more. I would feel lucky just to witness this in my garden, but to actually have a camera to hand is fantastic. The quality is good enough for ID purpose.

Just go out there and do it!!!

I was obviously so lucky...

...to see this in my garden. I just happened to look through the kitchen window and saw it. It (or should I say she) was in my garden for quite a long time, long enough for me to get the binoculars, then the bird book, then the camera, then my elder son... Not sure what type of bird she was plucking - the lawn was just that bit too long to see clearly but it was a dark coloured bird.
