the photo in my rspb guidebook shows Yellow Dung fly S.stercoraria with orange antennae. Is that variability or have they made an error?

Sounds like a mistake! There are some very common Sarcophagas with orange antennae, like furcata, inquinata...it may be one of those which is shown?

I guess they can be forgiven the odd mistake in such an ambitious pocket book, it's main strength the sheer range of family & genus covered.
