looks very similar to, if not the same as, Violet Ground Beetle, (Carabus violaceus).
You are absolutely right. They are very similar, the lucky thing for me for IDing purposes is that violaceus is no longer believed to be present in Ireland at all, old records have been disregarded as having been errors.
Problematicus seems to have a bit more striation (more ridged in texture) on the elytra than volaceus as far as I can see, having looked at quite a few picks of the 2. I think its similarity to violaceus possibly gives rise to its scientific name?? The confusion it has caused in the past? Maybe.
Many thanks Nightfly for the info on C. problematicus, next time I come across a C. violaceus i will give it more than a casual glance.
