Hi Douglas, can I pick your brains please. I note your ID of Common/Dark Marbled Carpet. Can I just confirm that you cannot ID these apart from a photograph ? Thanks Chris.

Debatable; I think you can have a pretty good idea, but they're both very variable it can be tricky to be 100%. Some could argue there are some ways to separate them on forewings but due to the variation, I'm not sure these can always be so clear-cut.
I think there is a form with a tawny coloured area across the wing which is only every truncata.
Looking at the underside of the wing is a very easy way to separate them, so a photo through the other side of pot would do.
