Dock rust

Observed: 19th May 2012 By: ChalkieChalkie’s reputation in Fungi and LichensChalkie’s reputation in Fungi and Lichens
19.5.12 ufton fields 001 dock with red spot
Description:

The leaf is either wood dock (or maybe curled dock) - it had bright scarlet spots about 1cm across, and when the leaf was turned over there were strange cell-like things - or maybe mini-toadstools? Edited - it seems that it is dock rust and the 'cell-like things' are 'aecia' - fruiting bodies. Fascinating!

Thank you very much.

They definitely look like the other pictures of dock rust. I'd tried googling dock and red spot, but hadn't found anything, so thanks for your help in pinning this down. Apparently it has a 5-stage life-cycle and also used Phragmites as a host.
